Beautiful Run in Oregon 10 - 13 June 2021

Another Great Run by Bill and Nancy Andrews!
This beautiful run from Vaughn Oregon (near the central city of Eugene) across the state to the coast includes several different climates, ranging from rolling farm land to rain forest to mountains to sand dunes to coastal plain. Dan opted to do it again but this time he invited his old friend Bob Hastings to come from Cinncinati and run with him. Dan met Bob when they were mentored together on the Finger Lakes Rail Road in April, 2007. They have worked together on the NAROCA Membership Committee since 2010. Bob is the NARCOA Secreatry.
This 30 car seton at the Rosboro Lumber yard with travel to Coos Bay, OR, and on to Coquille, OR, for 234 miles round trip. The run is enjoyable, with nine tunnels and more than a dozen long bridges (including three swing bridges). The CBRL is one of the best western motorcar excursions. Since 2011, when the Port of Coos Bay reopened the line, the speeder hobby has been able to ride with increasing frequency—usually three events per year.
Bill and Nancy Andrews again recreated their perfect schedule for the excursion that includes well timed stops and a lunch break at Mapleton, OR, where a cafe, coffee bar, and grocery store are available. The run back to Vaughn on Sunday was done mostly in the rain. Unfortunately, 007 broke down due to a fuel issue abouit 20 miles into the retrun trip and had to be trowed back. Even the best efforts by railcar experts could not revive the engine, which has having fuel issues. Thanks to Bill and Nancy Andrews for another fun and well organized run!

Railcar 007 goes to Starbase 13 for Heavy Maintenance!
My friend Steve Paluso, a renowed rail car mechanic in San Jose, took pity on me and offered to let me drop 007 at this shop on the way home. Admiral Paulso is the Commander of Starbase 13, a place where serious rail car issues are treated. I took Steve up on his offer and a few months later, I went back and picked up a car I barely recognized! Steve had worked his magic and done a complete overhaul of 007. I am looking forward to the first trip in 2022 to test it out!
